Raymond Ayala grew up in a humble and troubled
neighborhood of Rio Piedras, former annexed to the capital city, San Juan,
Puerto Rico. He did not dislike school, but his dream was to become a
professional baseball, and his musical tastes were his own generation. Upon
entering adolescence, however, he became interested in break dancing and
particularly rap, and began to sing topics in this latest style, with which he
was fully identified. In those years I had the opportunity to meet Pedro
Gerardo Torruelas, an independent deejay who, like most of his profession, he
was better known by his stage name: DJ Playero. Since the early 90s, this key
figure in the development of reggaeton been producing recordings that mixed
reggae rhythms and hip hop with improvised recitations in Spanish. DJ Playero
was able to appreciate the potential of the young Raymond and skills for rap,
particularly the ingenuity he displayed in his flowing improvisations, and
began to collaborate on a series of recordings that despite its almost artisan
craftsmanship, which soon became widely known among youth of the island.
